Join our Street Medicine Galveston team as we connect with individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness across Galveston Island. Our rounds offer hands-on experience in community-centered care, social medicine, and health advocacy in nontraditional settings. Students and community members collaborate to build trust, address both acute and chronic medical needs, and link patients to essential local resources. During rounds, small teams (3–5 students) distribute supply bags (including water, snacks, OTC medications, and sunscreen, etc) at locations such as Kempner Park, Rosenberg Library, the Courthouse, or along the Seawall. You’ll engage in conversation with unhoused neighbors to better understand their stories, interests, challenges, and needs. When appropriate, students help connect individuals to health and social services. Each session concludes with a group reflection, where students share insights and feedback to improve future rounds.
