The NICU Reading Program is a volunteer initiative where students read to infants in the NICU to support early neurocognitive development, language exposure, and emotional comfort. Volunteers must complete the training slides before participating. Shifts are one hour long, with two people per shift. The program is located at UTMB John Sealy Hospital on the 6th floor (NICU). Volunteers should check in at the front desk and state that you are part of the NICU Reading Program. Books are provided in the cabinet next to the entrance sink on side 6C and are hospital-approved for easy cleaning. After reading, books should be wiped down and placed in the designated “dirty” bin in the cabinet. To receive credit for the session, you must: • Check in through the iPad at the front desk and state you are a part of the NICU Reading Program upon arrival • Volunteer for no more than 1–2 shifts per day • Scan the QR code (located in cabinet) and complete the checkout questionnaire at the end of your session Volunteers must wear scrubs and keep their UTMB badge visible at all times.
