SMART Family Literacy Party - This is what we call our family engagement model. It is an informal party atmosphere using theme and party props. Every event includes reading aloud, fresh veggie and fruit platter, and hands-on educational activities. Each family receives three free books. Volunteers are needed to load and unload supplies, setup hands-on stations, and guide activities. Depending upon the skill and interest of volunteers, they are needed to: manage craft supplies like paint and glue; guide the group in following a recipe, such as smoothies or salad; teach how to do a simple kitchen science demonstration or experiment; pass out door prize tickets; greet families, read a book aloud. Urban Strategies aims to help, guide, and encourage residents to further build upon successes as they follow the organizational vision that “All families are stable and thriving”. In order to serve more students, tutoring sessions will be held at Wright Cuney Recreation Center with snacks provided by USI with program dates following the GISD school calendar. Students in grades 3-12 will be able to enjoy hot cocoa, teas, soft drinks, and light snacks as they receive quality academic support. The Koko Kafe program also seeks to encourage K-12 students to explore STEM. SMART Family Literacy Party - This is what we call our family engagement model. It is an informal party atmosphere using theme and party props. Every event includes reading aloud, fresh veggie and fruit platter, and hands-on educational activities. Each family receives three free books. Volunteers are needed to load and unload supplies, setup hands-on stations, and guide activities. Depending upon the skill and interest of volunteers, they are needed to: manage craft supplies like paint and glue; guide the group in following a recipe, such as smoothies or salad; teach how to do a simple kitchen science demonstration or experiment; pass out door prize tickets; greet families, read a book aloud. Volunteers are paired as a buddy with participants of the Christina Sullivan Foundation's Camp PossAbilities in the pilot Adaptive Inclusive Art and Music Therapy Program! This program provides an opportunity for individuals with differing abilities to utilize artistic outlets in order to express emotions, practice motor skills and reduce stress in a supportive environment.

Urban Strategies is part of the Galveston Revitalization Program located at the Cedars at Carver Park, the Villas on the Strand, and the up-and-coming site, The Oleanders at Broadway. Urban Strategies aims to help, guide, and encourage residents to further build upon successes as they follow the organizational vision that “All families are stable and thriving”. In order to serve more students, tutoring sessions will be held at Wright Cuney Recreation Center with snacks provided by USI with program dates following the GISD school calendar. Students in grades 3-12 will be able to enjoy hot cocoa, teas, soft drinks, and light snacks as they receive quality academic support. The Koko Kafe program also seeks to encourage K-12 students to explore STEM. When UTMB students arrive at The Oleanders at Broadway, they will park in the garage at the second building. SMART Family Literacy Party - This is what we call our family engagement model. It is an informal party atmosphere using theme and party props. Every event includes reading aloud, fresh veggie and fruit platter, and hands-on educational activities. Each family receives three free books. Volunteers are needed to load and unload supplies, setup hands-on stations, and guide activities. Depending upon the skill and interest of volunteers, they are needed to: manage craft supplies like paint and glue; guide the group in following a recipe, such as smoothies or salad; teach how to do a simple kitchen science demonstration or experiment; pass out door prize tickets; greet families, read a book aloud. Connect families and individuals in crisis who do not have access to fresh produce. Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. Please dress in active, weather appropriate attire, and closed toed shoes.

SMART Family Literacy Party - This is what we call our family engagement model. It is an informal party atmosphere using theme and party props. Every event includes reading aloud, fresh veggie and fruit platter, and hands-on educational activities. Each family receives three free books. Volunteers are needed to load and unload supplies, setup hands-on stations, and guide activities. Depending upon the skill and interest of volunteers, they are needed to: manage craft supplies like paint and glue; guide the group in following a recipe, such as smoothies or salad; teach how to do a simple kitchen science demonstration or experiment; pass out door prize tickets; greet families, read a book aloud. Not a wheelchair accessible venue. If you have Spanish speaking skills or musical skills please let Liz Turner know, 409-771-4155 and please wear UTMB badge.

Students will help with general eye health screening, visual acuity tests, glasses fittings (taking measurements for bifocals, pupil distance, etc.), and possibly help with refractions and eye pressure testing. No prior experience is necessary, you will be trained upon arrival.
