This unique experience allows medical students to actively engage in the education and development of high school students with disabilities. Through a partnership with Ball High School, UTMB students will support classroom educators by facilitating meaningful interactions and adaptive learning activities. This collaboration provides future healthcare professionals with valuable exposure to inclusive education, disability advocacy, and person-centered communication—enhancing their ability to serve individuals with diverse needs. Ball High School is at 4115 Avenue O, Galveston. You may find a spot in the large parking lot across from Ball High or along 41st Street. You will enter the school at the entrance closest to 41st Street (there is a flagpole near this entrance). Check in: Go to the Front Desk and sign in on the High School Sign in sheet in the blue binder; your specific classroom will be listed there.

This clinical experience introduces you to high-acuity inpatient environments, the Burn Unit and Surgical ICU. As a first-year medical student, your goal is not to shadow, but to support direct patient care, engage with the interprofessional care team, and cultivate essential habits of observation, empathy, communication, and teamwork. Dress Code: Scrubs only.
Hospital to Home (H2H) is a student-led clinical experience aimed at connecting hospitalized patients at high risk for unmet social and medical needs with the appropriate resources. The program aims to improve health outcomes and reduce the need for future hospitalization. Students in the program help facilitate a successful transition of care by providing basic medical equipment, assessing social determinants of health, and identifying community resources to bridge those gaps. The "Stories at the Bedside" program aims to enhance patient-centered communication and humanistic care. Participants learn to engage patients in conversations to identify their personal values, interests, and support systems, moving beyond their medical diagnosis. The core activity involves medical students creating a personalized bedside poster for patients, highlighting aspects of their life that bring them joy and are important to them. This poster serves as a tool for the care team to connect with patients more meaningfully, fostering rapport and personalizing care while respecting patient autonomy and privacy. Review recorded patient interview, write H&P with differential diagnosis and initial plan for further evaluation/treatment, and prepare for oral presentation prior to session. During session, students will give an oral presentation to the facilitator in front of peers. Facilitator will provide feedback to oral presentation and written H&P. Will discuss differential diagnosis and management plan as a group. Dress Code: Business casual/usual clinic attire preferred
