CHRISTUS Our Daily Bread provides nutritious meals, clean clothing, personal hygiene, mental health, and medical services to the community, many of whom are experiencing homelessness. You will serve as a general volunteer, a big need is helping in the kitchen for food preparation. Dress Code: Wear comfortable, modest clothing that you don't mind getting dirty. Closed-toe, non-slip shoes are required. Long hair should be tied back, and loose jewelry should be avoided. Aprons, gloves, and hairnets will be provided as needed.
Food Pantry volunteers help organize and sort food and hygiene items, pack grocery bags and snack packs, and distribute groceries, hygiene items, cleaning supplies and snack packs to clients during pantry hours. DRESS CODE Volunteers are a representative of St. Vincent’s House and are responsible for presenting a positive image to our clients and our community. The event is a community service initiative aimed at providing lunch to the unhoused and underserved individuals in Galveston. Sunshine Center’s mission is to enhance independence, as well as community responsibility, and to foster self-esteem and dignity among individuals with developmental disabilities. Current programs assist individuals with developing and maintaining educational, vocational, social, and life skills that allow them to lead a happy and fulfilling life. There are a range of activities you may be helping with on any given day: ceramics, coloring, gardening outdoors, community outings, and more. Please come dressed to be able to comfortably participate. Be prepared to be flexible and go with the flow. If you feel a little confused or need guidance, please ask. The main goal is to be a helper and to create positive experiences while you improve your understanding of the lived experience of people with disability. Hospital to Home (H2H) is a student-led clinical experience aimed at connecting hospitalized patients at high risk for unmet social and medical needs with the appropriate resources. The program aims to improve health outcomes and reduce the need for future hospitalization. Students in the program help facilitate a successful transition of care by providing basic medical equipment, assessing social determinants of health, and identifying community resources to bridge those gaps. Please confirm you can access St. Vincent’s Epic Context ASAP, even before your first day, as it may take a couple days for activation. Drug Court is a legal system that provides an opportunity for substance use offenders to undergo a lengthy and meticulous rehabilitation program to clear their record and avoid incarceration. It is led by Judge Ellisor, and is staffed by a legal team, parole officers, and community support systems. The first hour consists of updates from staff and going over the participants for the day.
The Harmony Healers program is an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to come together to perform music for patients in the hospital and increase patient morale. Soloists (or duets if you prefer to prepare with another person in advance) who sing and/or play an instrument are welcome to attend these sessions to prepare and perform music for patients. Volunteers make a big difference in language and learning by being caring adults to engage in conversation. We recommend parking in the Moody Methodist Church lot and walking across the parking lot, because the traffic close to the school is difficult at dismissal time. This is NOT the garden on Ave. S. KoKo Kafe’ is a positive, relaxed, and non-intimidating experience that will focus on tutoring Math and Reading/Writing provided by Urban Strategies, Inc. Urban Strategies is part of the Galveston Revitalization Program located at the Cedars at Carver Park, the Villas on the This 13-week Eco-Art Residency program provides 3rd–8th grade students living in Galveston’s Northside of Broadway community with hands-on learning in science, art, and environmental stewardship. Based at The Oleanders at Broadway, students will explore STEM and fine arts through interactive lessons, mural creation, and local field adventures across the island. Volunteers will support afterschool sessions, assist on family STEAM nights.
