The NICU Reading Program is a volunteer initiative where students read to infants in the NICU to support early neurocognitive development, language exposure, and emotional comfort. Volunteers must complete the training slides before participating. Shifts are one hour long, with two people per shift. The program is located at UTMB John Sealy Hospital on the 6th floor (NICU). Volunteers should check in at the front desk and state that you are part of the NICU Reading Program. Books are provided in the cabinet next to the entrance sink on side 6C and are hospital-approved for easy cleaning. After reading, books should be wiped down and placed in the designated “dirty” bin in the cabinet. To receive credit for the session, you must: • Check in through the iPad at the front desk and state you are a part of the NICU Reading Program upon arrival • Volunteer for no more than 1–2 shifts per day • Scan the QR code (located in cabinet) and complete the checkout questionnaire at the end of your session Volunteers must wear scrubs and keep their UTMB badge visible at all times. Work directly with 3rd and 4th grade children, helping them improve social skills, reading, mathematics, and learning while fulfilling your service-learning requirements. By partnering with ACE, you’ll play a key role in shaping young learners’ futures while gaining valuable experience for your medical career.
You may be helping in a variety of areas from gardening outdoors to tutoring indoors. Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes so you can move around easily. Casual dress is fine. Plan to arrive between 3:30pm and 3:45pm. Parents will be picking up their kids around this time so you can expect traffic around the school.
Oppe Elementary is on 2915 81st Street in Galveston. You can park in the playground parking lot that is across the street from Oppe and walk up to the front entrance. Let them know you are there for the ACE after school program for tutoring. Please bring your driver’s license as you may need it to enter the school.
