Work alongside an interprofessional team to care for medically and socially complex patients at St. Vincent's Hope Clinic. This hands-on experience strengthens your clinical skills, teamwork, and patient-centered care while serving an underserved community in a supportive learning environment.
This clinical experience introduces you to high-acuity inpatient environments, the Burn Unit and Surgical ICU. As a first-year medical student, your goal is not to shadow, but to support direct patient care, engage with the interprofessional care team, and cultivate essential habits of observation, empathy, communication, and teamwork. Dress Code: Scrubs only.
Hospital to Home (H2H) is a student-led clinical experience aimed at connecting hospitalized patients at high risk for unmet social and medical needs with the appropriate resources. The program aims to improve health outcomes and reduce the need for future hospitalization. Students in the program help facilitate a successful transition of care by providing basic medical equipment, assessing social determinants of health, and identifying community resources to bridge those gaps. During this outpatient dermatology shadowing experience, you will observe how dermatologists evaluate and care for patients with a variety of skin conditions. You will gain early exposure to the dermatologic history and physical examination, including how skin findings are described and interpreted, while observing patient-centered communication, clinical reasoning, and the flow of care in an outpatient specialty clinic. This experience is designed to help you connect foundational science and clinical skills with real-world patient care. Dress Code: - Scrubs suitable for clinic use and white coat. - You must have your student ID visible. You will not be allowed entry without your student id. Check in at the front desk.

Participants learn to engage patients in conversations to identify their personal values, interests, and support systems, moving beyond their medical diagnosis. The core activity involves medical students creating a personalized bedside poster for patients, highlighting aspects of their life that bring them joy and are important to them. This poster serves as a tool for the care team to connect with patients more meaningfully, fostering rapport and personalizing care while respecting patient autonomy and privacy. Review recorded patient interview, write H&P with differential diagnosis and initial plan for further evaluation/treatment, and prepare for oral presentation prior to session. During session, students will give an oral presentation to the facilitator in front of peers. Facilitator will provide feedback to oral presentation and written H&P. Will discuss differential diagnosis and management plan as a group. Dress Code: Business casual/usual clinic attire preferred
