CHRISTUS Our Daily Bread provides nutritious meals, clean clothing, personal hygiene, mental health, and medical services to the community, many of whom are experiencing homelessness. You will serve as a general volunteer, a big need is helping in the kitchen for food preparation.
Food Pantry volunteers help organize and sort food and hygiene items, pack grocery bags and snack packs, and distribute groceries, hygiene items, cleaning supplies and snack packs to clients during pantry hours. From 8:00–9:00 AM, produce arrives on trailers, volunteers are expected to assist with unloading these items. Students must be able to lift at least 40 pounds, as some produce can be quite heavy. DRESS CODE Volunteers are a representative of St. Vincent’s House and are responsible for presenting a positive image to our clients and our community. Volunteers should dress appropriately for the work area to which they are assigned and are expected to exercise good judgement and dress appropriately. • Appearance should be neat and clean • No short shorts, crop tops baring the midriff area, sheer, or low-cut tops • No open-toed or open-backed shoes in the Food Pantry or while doing maintenance work • Avoid wearing expensive jewelry while volunteering at SVH, and do not bring valuables with you or leave them in your car while volunteering (we do have small lockers in the Pantry area)
Sunshine Center’s mission is to enhance independence, as well as community responsibility, and to foster self-esteem and dignity among individuals with developmental disabilities. Current programs assist individuals with developing and maintaining educational, vocational, social, and life skills that allow them to lead a happy and fulfilling life. There are a range of activities you may be helping with on any given day: ceramics, coloring, gardening outdoors, community outings, and more. Please come dressed to be able to comfortably participate. Be prepared to be flexible and go with the flow. If you feel a little confused or need guidance, please ask. The main goal is to be a helper and to create positive experiences while you improve your understanding of the lived experience of people with disability. There are two ways to participate for the PDSLP (Please contact Michelle Hollins 409-763-5029 at Sunshine in advance. Identify yourself as a UTMB student and confirm your scheduled volunteer dates and times so the staff can expect you.: 1.Thursday afternoons with OT student (12:30pm-3:00pm): Helping support Dr. Boyd’s 8 group sessions (up to 4 volunteers from School of Medicine) 2.The 2nd and 4th Wednesday morning of every month with up to 4 volunteers (8:30am – 11:00am). UTMB students will be assigned by Sunshine staff to either stay and support activities or participate in a community service outing supporting Sunshine members at Catholic Charities. • Students would arrive and help at Sunshine. Those staying Sunshine can be assigned to help with whatever is most helpful. • Those going to Catholic Charities drive their own cars from Sunshine to the site and they will be done when the community service experience is completed at Catholic Charities. (They will leave from there)

Work directly with older adults in a senior day program providing meaningful and purposeful social interactions while fulfilling your service-learning requirements. By partnering with Libbie's Place, you’ll play a key role in providing meaningful engagement for older adults experiencing a decline in independence while gaining valuable experience for your medical career. Participating students are required to commit to a minimum of 4 session. Once signed up, students should call Corinne Rhoades 409-741-2538 to let her know which dates will be available to attend.
To deliver groceries & hygiene supplies to over 140 families in crisis that have no mode of transportation on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays in personal vehicles & alongside with other volunteers. Dress weather appropriate with active wear & closed toed shoes. Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. use personal vehicles & work with other volunteer.

UTMB OT students have the opportunity to participate in learning experiences supporting the provision of occupational therapy services under the direction of a licensed Occupational Therapist’s Supervision. Student may have varying experiences. Potential learning experiences may include partnering directly the OTR or may be a collaborative learning experience with other disciplines to help identify potential OT needs. All OT services provided must be approved by the OTR prior to implementation. Four volunteer spots are open on this day. Two slots are available for each OT cohort.
This unique experience allows medical students to actively engage in the education and development of high school students with disabilities. Through a partnership with Ball High School, UTMB students will support classroom educators by facilitating meaningful interactions and adaptive learning activities. This collaboration provides future healthcare professionals with valuable exposure to inclusive education, disability advocacy, and person-centered communication—enhancing their ability to serve individuals with diverse needs. Parking: It is recommended to get to Ball about 15 mins early because it may be a little challenging to find parking. You may find a spot in the large parking lot across from Ball High or along 41st street. You will enter the school at the entrance closest to 41st street (there is flagpole near this entrance). The last door on the right when you are facing the 41st Street entrance is the one that will be unlocked and it has an orange sign indicating you can enter there. A clinic providing integrated, interprofessional care to medically, socially complex uninsured patients. The health professions providing care at the interprofessional clinic include clinical lab sciences, licensed counselors, medical doctors, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, respiratory care, and social work. This clinic is staffed by students that are part of the I-COPE program, students that have committed to providing longitudinal care to the underserved over the course of their third year of medical school.

By partnering with ACE, you’ll play a key role in shaping young learners’ futures while gaining valuable experience for your medical career. You may be helping in a variety of areas from gardening outdoors to tutoring indoors. Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes so you can move around easily. Casual dress is fine. Plan to arrive between 3:30pm and 3:45pm. Parents will be picking up their kids around this time so you can expect traffic around the school. Oppe Elementary is on 2915 81st Street in Galveston. You can park in the playground parking lot that is across the street from Oppe and walk up to the front entrance. Let them know you are there for the ACE after school program for tutoring. Please bring your driver’s license as you may need it to enter the school.

Volunteers/service learners will help children from pre-K through second grade grow vegetables and fruits a the school gardens, read aloud, and give the children books to keep. Volunteers make a big difference in language and learning by being caring adults to engage in conversation. Sign in at the schools with Paula Mian, Garden Manager for SMART Family Literacy.
