CHRISTUS Our Daily Bread provides nutritious meals, clean clothing, personal hygiene, mental health, and medical services to the community, many of whom are experiencing homelessness. You will serve as a general volunteer, a big need is helping in the kitchen for food preparation.
Food Pantry volunteers help organize and sort food and hygiene items, pack grocery bags and snack packs, and distribute groceries, hygiene items, cleaning supplies and snack packs to clients during pantry hours. DRESS CODE Volunteers are a representative of St. Vincent’s House and are responsible for presenting a positive image to our clients and our community. Volunteers should dress appropriately for the work area to which they are assigned and are expected to exercise good judgement and dress appropriately. • Appearance should be neat and clean • No short shorts, crop tops baring the midriff area, sheer, or low-cut tops • No open-toed or open-backed shoes in the Food Pantry or while doing maintenance work • Avoid wearing expensive jewelry while volunteering at SVH, and do not bring valuables with you or leave them in your car while volunteering (we do have small lockers in the Pantry area)

By partnering with Libbie's Place, you’ll play a key role in providing meaningful engagement for older adults experiencing a decline in independence while gaining valuable experience for your medical career. The event is a community service initiative aimed at providing lunch to the unhoused and underserved individuals in Galveston. Hosted at Galveston Central Church, volunteers will come together to prepare and serve meals, ensuring that those in need receive a hot meal and a sense of support and community. The activities will include assembling sandwiches, plating food, and distributing the meals to those in attendance, with the goal of fostering compassion, generosity, and social responsibility. Volunteers will play a crucial role in making the event run smoothly, working together to serve food and possibly engage with community members in a meaningful way. This event will not only provide a meal but also show solidarity with those facing challenges in the area.
To deliver groceries & hygiene supplies to over 140 families in crisis that have no mode of transportation on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays in personal vehicles & alongside with other volunteers. Dress weather appropriate with active wear & closed toed shoes. Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. use personal vehicles & work with other volunteer.

This clinical experience introduces you to high-acuity inpatient environments, the Burn Unit and Surgical ICU. As a first-year medical student, your goal is not to shadow, but to support direct patient care, engage with the interprofessional care team, and cultivate essential habits of observation, empathy, communication, and teamwork.
UTMB OT students have the opportunity to participate in learning experiences supporting the provision of occupational therapy services under the direction of a licensed Occupational Therapist’s Supervision. Student may have varying experiences. Potential learning experiences may include partnering directly the OTR or may be a collaborative learning experience with medical students to help identify potential OT needs. All OT services provided must be approved by the OTR prior to implementation. Four volunteer spots are open on this day. Two slots are available for each OT cohort.

Students in the program help facilitate a successful transition of care by providing basic medical equipment, assessing social determinants of health, and identifying community resources to bridge those gaps. Drug Court is a legal system that provides an opportunity for substance use offenders to undergo a lengthy and meticulous rehabilitation program to clear their record and avoid incarceration. It is led by Judge Ellisor, and is staffed by a legal team, parole officers, and community support systems. The first hour consists of updates from staff and going over the participants for the day.
The Harmony Healers program is an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to come together to perform music for patients in the hospital and increase patient morale. Soloists (or duets if you prefer to prepare with another person in advance) who sing and/or play an instrument are welcome to attend these sessions to prepare and perform music for patients. When you arrive, you will receive information about the role of music in healing and some logistical information. Afterwards, you will go up to your assigned unit and perform for patients until 4:00pm. You should have a few pieces of music memorized to perform for patients.
