Food & Hygiene Pantry: General Help & Inventory

Food Pantry volunteers help organize and sort food and hygiene items, pack grocery bags and snack packs, and distribute groceries, hygiene items, cleaning supplies and snack packs to clients during pantry hours. From 8:00–9:00 AM, produce arrives on trailers, volunteers are expected to assist with unloading these items. Students must be able to lift at least 40 pounds, as some produce can be quite heavy.
DRESS CODE
Volunteers are a representative of St. Vincent’s House and are responsible for presenting a positive image to our clients and our community. Volunteers should dress appropriately for the work area to which they are assigned and are expected to exercise good judgement and dress appropriately.
• Appearance should be neat and clean
• No short shorts, crop tops baring the midriff area, sheer, or low-cut tops
• No open-toed or open-backed shoes in the Food Pantry or while doing maintenance work
• Avoid wearing expensive jewelry while volunteering at SVH, and do not bring valuables with you or leave them in your car while volunteering (we do have small lockers in the Pantry area)

People with Disabilities - Sunshine

Sunshine Center’s mission is to enhance independence, as well as community responsibility, and to foster self-esteem and dignity among individuals with developmental disabilities. Current programs assist individuals with developing and maintaining educational, vocational, social, and life skills that allow them to lead a happy and fulfilling life.
There are a range of activities you may be helping with on any given day: ceramics, coloring, gardening outdoors, community outings, and more. Please come dressed to be able
to comfortably participate. Be prepared to be flexible and go with the flow.
If you feel a little confused or need guidance, please ask. The main goal is to be a helper and to create positive experiences while you improve your understanding of the lived experience of people with disability.
There are two ways to participate for the PDSLP (Please contact Michelle Hollins 409-763-5029 at Sunshine in advance. Identify yourself as a UTMB student and confirm your scheduled volunteer dates and times so the staff can expect you.:
1.Thursday afternoons with OT student (12:30pm-3:00pm): Helping support Dr. Boyd’s 8 group sessions (up to 4 volunteers from School of Medicine)
2.The 2nd and 4th Wednesday morning of every month with up to 4 volunteers (8:30am – 11:00am). UTMB students will be assigned by Sunshine staff to either stay and support activities or participate in a community service outing supporting Sunshine members at Catholic Charities.
• Students would arrive and help at Sunshine. Those staying Sunshine can be assigned to help with whatever is most helpful.
• Those going to Catholic Charities drive their own cars from Sunshine to the site and they will be done when the community service experience is completed at Catholic Charities. (They will leave from there)

To deliver groceries & hygiene supplies to over 140 families in crisis that have no mode of transportation on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays in personal vehicles & alongside with other volunteers. Dress weather appropriate with active wear & closed toed shoes. Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. use personal vehicles & work with other volunteer.

KoKo Kafe’ is a positive, relaxed, and non-intimidating experience that will focus on tutoring Math and Reading/Writing provided by Urban Strategies, Inc. Urban Strategies is part of the Galveston Revitalization Program located at the Cedars at Carver Park, the Villas on the This 13-week Eco-Art Residency program provides 3rd–8th grade students living in Galveston’s Northside of Broadway community with hands-on learning in science, art, and environmental stewardship. Based at The Oleanders at Broadway, students will explore STEM and fine arts through interactive lessons, mural creation, and local field adventures across the island. Volunteers will support afterschool sessions, assist on family STEAM nights. Through this experience, students will build confidence, connect with their environment, and see themselves as scientists, artists, and leaders in their own community.
• Mondays & Friday: Students (Grades 3–8) will explore science and art through hands-on lessons and begin designing a large mural focused on Galveston’s natural environment.
• Tuesday: Reading
• Wednesday: Math
• Thursdays (Family STEAM Nights): Families are invited to join for interactive science and art activities—like underwater robotics, dissections, and environmental exploration.
When UTMB students arrive at The Oleanders at Broadway, you park at the second building. (The second building behind the main one right off Broadway) Upon arrival, be sure to sign your name on the sign-in sheet with leadership.
